The Amplify effect
Use the Amplify Effect to increase or decrease the volume a portion or all of the track.
- Select a part of the track you wish to amplify.
- Select Amplify from the Effects menu. The Amplify pop up window will appear.
- Enter a new peak amplification by entering a value into the text box or dragging with the slider.
If your amplification is too great, the wave will be above the height of the wave. If this happens, select clipping to remove the top and lower frequencies. Be aware that this may change the quality .
The Envelop tool
Use the envelop tool to change the volume of the whole track or to fade in and out at specific parts.
- Click on the envelope button and you will see dark grey bars appear at the top and bottom of the audio track.
- Click on one point on the audio, hold the left mouse button down and drag the small handles up and down to increase or decrease volume.
- Click again on another part of the audio and drag the handles up and down as before. You can keep clicking along the track to place additional points which you can drag up and down to change the volume.
Increase or decrease gain
You can also change the volume of the track while you are working in Audacity, but not change the volume in the original file. The Gain tool allows you to do this.

- Click on the + (or the – button if you want to decrease the volume ) button in the small window to the left of your audio track.
Alternatively you can increase or decrease the volume on your computer
- If you are using a Mac, click on the speaker icon in the top menu and move the slider.
- If you are using a Windows computer, click on the speaker icon in the bottom right menu and move the slider.
