If you are preparing videos for your teaching (lectures, tutorials, instructions, etc) here are some tips for simple edits:

  • If all you need to do is top and tail your video and use a Mac you can open your video with Quick Time Player go under Edit in the top menu and choose “trim” the video will be presented with a slider at the bottom that you can move (beginning and end) and trim the part you do not want. Save and you are done.
  • If your video is in ECHO you can also do simple trimming there, go to the video you want to top and tail (in ECHO), click on the video you would like to edit, you will have a menu with a range of things you can do scroll down to edit video. Again, you will see your video with a slider, move the slider (beginning and end) to the part you wish to keep, go to the top corner and click on save. If you wish to keep the un-edited copy click on save as instead. Remember that you can upload any video you have created in ECHO (like Zoom recording for example) and use ECHO to trim and deliver.
  • You can also use some tools like Screencast O’Matic to both record and edit your videos and with these it does not matter what computer you use.
  • If you would like a more advanced editing software for free, try DaVinci Resolve! It is a free software available for both Windows and Mac.

As usual our team is here to help if you have any questions about video for teaching, video editing techniques and tips so feel free to contact us at education.cass@anu.edu.au.
